Do I need a multivitamin?

Not everyone needs a multivitamin. If you eat a varied, balanced diet and have no known deficiencies, you may already get enough vitamins and minerals from food. Multivitamins can still be useful for people with restricted diets, poor appetite, absorption issues, or higher needs (e.g. pregnancy, older adults).

Choose a product that fits your age and sex and does not exceed upper limits for any nutrient. More is not always better; megadoses of some vitamins or minerals can be harmful. If you take other supplements, check total intake to avoid excess. A healthcare provider or dietitian can help you decide whether a multivitamin is right for you.
